week 9
While I was in Mexico we just stayed in the area where my parents lived and go to the city. That was basically our days over there. But as a family, we decided to go to this one island called Patzcuaro, Michoacán. to get there we had to go on boats it wasn't an island you can drive up to this one was an actual island. How they lived and how their neighborhood was built was way different from over here in the US and where my parents grew up. Their house was built on the island it was like a mountain just a hill and the top of the hill just went up. The farther you go up the roads the steeper it gets. I also notice how all the little streets connect to the top basically the main attraction of why people go there. There's a huge statue of the founder of Michoacán and people can go inside the statue and go to the top of it. What I was drawn to while being there was how much they appreciate the Mexican culture and the" Michoacán style" of our culture. I learned more about my parent's state (Michoacán) by just being there for a couple of hours. They did the state dance which is called Danza de Los viejitos which is just people dressed up as old men dancing in the festival. It attracted people because that's the main part or image of Michoacán it has its history. What I was uncertain about was the structure of how the houses were built and of course for my safety but just how it was constructed, especially the steepness of it. If I could visit again, Id love to take time and actually look at the artwork and story that the statue has inside of it. Not just that but actually take time to embrace where I came from, take the moment and learn so much more than what I know about Michoacán and my culture.
Danza de los viejitos and Patzcuaro, Michoacán:
Hi Jackqueline! I'm glad you were able to visit where your parents lived and that you were able to experience the culture they grew up with. I've never been to Mexico but would like to visit one day if I ever get the opportunity. It's awesome that the Michoacán people are so passionate about their history and art. I've recently found myself observing designs and colors of decorated cities that have an authentic or rich culture and find it absolutely fascinating.
ReplyDeletewouldve loved to hear the backstory for the dressing up as old men part, but incredible article, great work!
